Ingredients
- Protein: These dog foods have plenty of meat protein, and you get to pick different combos. Like, the Multi-protein one has chicken, turkey, and lamb meal, while the Less Active version has chicken meal. They also put in some protein from barley, millet, and ocean fish.
- Fats: Each type has different fats like chicken fat, flaxseed, sunflower, or salmon oil. Fats are important for giving your dog energy and keeping their skin and fur healthy.
- Carbs: You’ll find carbs in the form of grains or plants in all the All Life Stages options. Stuff like pearled barley, millet, brown rice, potatoes, and oatmeal.
- Tricky Ingredients: In the Healthy Weight one, there’s something called tomato pomace, which some people argue is just filler. But, it’s listed as the 13th ingredient, so it might just be there for some extra fiber.
My Experience Buying Multi-protein Dog Food For My Pet
I recently purchased a bag of this dog food from their official website. I typically feed my 8 yr old Australian Shepard Taste of the Wild, but I had heard good things about Canidae dog food over the years, and as this bag was on sale I decided to try it (I mixed it with some TotW she was finishing).
My dog Selkie turned up her nose at it for 24 hours before she tried it. Within 12 hours she was vomiting. I thought it might have been the heat (it was during a hot spell in July), so I continued with the Canidae/TotW. The next day, same thing. Gave it one more day, but by then her bile was bright yellow with red flecks. Fasted her for a day, gave her Dr Marty’s raw food to allow her stomach to heal, and she’s well again; no vomiting for the last 48 hours. After reading some reviews here where other pet owners have reported similar issues, I see why Petco had the food clearanced! Guess I’ll be sticking with Taste of the Wild!.
Canidae Multi-protein Dog Food Pros: Positive Points
- The dog food has a gentle chicken and fish smell.
- The size of the food chunks is just right for most dogs
- It has a reasonable price.
Canidae Multi-protein Dog Food Cons: Negative Points Of This All Life Stages Dog Food
- Actual protein is 5.4% higher than the guarantee.
- Cranberries, alfalfa, papaya, pineapple, and sage extract are included in amounts below 0.2%.
- Microscope images and visual inspection reveal an excess of fine crumbs in the food.
Is Canidae Multi-protein Dog Food Worth Your Money
Yes it’s worth your money. The package mentions more than 10 guarantees about the food being nutritious, which is a good thing. It’s clear that the food aims to make your pet’s coat look nice, keep their stomach happy, and boost their immune system. However, some claims like “Health Plus” and “Pet Food Made By Pet People” don’t come with explanations. The package talks about “Multiple Proteins,” but it doesn’t say why having more than one protein source is better.
Where To Buy
