The term “convenience fee” wasn’t clearly mentioned in the original agreement between the folks and Mr. Cooper. The person who filed the case says this goes against Maryland laws meant to protect consumers dealing with debts. Even the Maryland Commissioner of Financial Regulation chimed in, saying these fees should only happen if they were clearly allowed in the loan documents before they charged you.
How Much Is The Settlement
If you’ve already got some money back, great news. Now, if this settlement plan gets approved, Mr. Cooper is going to donate $37,200 to Habitat for Humanity and the Housing Initiative Partnership. Half of that money goes to each charity. Also, they’re covering the legal fees for the lawyers who are helping sort this out that’s $114,240.
However, for people in the class, unfortunately, there’s no extra cash coming your way as part of this settlement. It’s more about the donations and covering the legal side.
