Phishing Scams – This kind of scam come in the format of a text message or an email. Often times, it could be disguised to look like it is from a legit source like Amazon, Hermes, Royal Group, ltd. You’d be told to click the link on the text to verify a mail delivery of a product. When you do so, you’d be taken to a malicious website. Then your personal and financial information would be collected from you and sold to the dark web.
Lottery Scams – This kind of scam often comes in the form of Anniversary giveaway or Pop up messages on your browser. Though they might look legit, they are very far from being legitimate. Examples – Amazon Raffle Airpods, Rolex 100th Anniversary Giveaway, 750Shein, etc.
E-commerce Scams – According to FTC, online shopping and negative reviews is the second most reported fraud category in 2021. Every day, SabiReviews exposes more than five different fraudulent stores. Some online stores are outrageously suspicious, while others are simply fraudulent. Customers never receive the items paid for. Examples – Medusify, ManaTarget, Brioutlet, Finereu, Forum etc.
Product Scams – This is another kind of scam that leverages on YouTube or Facebook advertising to target unsuspecting buyers. The Ads say a different thing, while the product does a different thing. It is called bait and switch scam, it is prevalent in online marketing. The sellers send an inferior cheaper product instead of what was in the website. Examples of such products – Jack Skellington, Voltex, Breeze Maxx, Novitec Wifi Booster, MultiVoltz, etc.
How To Identify Scam Websites
Check the Domain age – How old is the website? (You can do so by visiting who.is)
Physical Location – Does The website provide return address? If Yes (Copy the address and paste on your browser. Google map would show if it is a real warehouse address or a residential address)
Check Reviews – Are there customer reviews online? (It is advised that you sit it out if there are no customer reviews of the store. However if you’re not patient enough to wait you can send a mail to us to verify if the store is legit)
Social Media Presence – Do the social media icons work? (A lot of fraudulent websites provide social media buttons but they don’t work. It is advised that you check if the buttons really take you to the store’s social media page)
