Zelle Scam on Facebook Marketplace 2023: Beware!

Scammers are chatting sellers up on Facebook marketplace, pretending to be interested in a item and insisting to pay via Zelle. They often pay more than the asking price. Beware, it is a scam. This detailed article exposes how this scam works, and how to avoid being scammed.

It works this way –

The scammers pretend to be potential buyers, but will insist on using Zelle to pay you for the item you listed. When agreement has been reached, they will send you a fake Zelle payment notification, making you believe that they’ve paid for the item.

You may also receive a fake email from your bank, falsely claiming that they have already paid with Zelle, making you believe you need to send them the item. Of course, they haven’t sent you a cent!

Meanwhile, there are other ways with which you can be scammed through Zelle payment. Recently, a woman was scammed on Facebook by a fake rental home listing. After she had sent more than $3,000 to the supposed landlord, she realized it was a scam.

 Sadly, according to reports, neither Zelle, nor its parent company Early Warning Services, nor the banks that host the app have been stepping up to refund the stolen funds. 

This scam is quite similar to another ongoing scam, Chronopost Facebook scam. The same modus operandi.

What You Should do about this

Don’t fall for the bait. Always treat anyone who insists on Zelle payment with suspicion. Don’t send them your email or address. If you’ve already done so, be careful not to click on any link when they send you the email.
